Advanced surgical care delivered with a compassionate touch.

At Louisiana Veterinary Specialists, we’re extremely proud to announce the

launch of our entirely new, state-of- the-art specialty hospital and surgery

center. With a commitment to comprehensive veterinary service that’s both

compassionate and precise, our brand new facility and specialized staff

allows for expert specialty care for pets that require the best possible

analysis, treatment and surgical expertise available across Central

Louisiana and beyond.

Our expert veterinary surgeon, Dr. Jude T. Bordelon, possesses

unparalleled expertise over an expansive range of surgical procedures and

specialty medical practices, which can truly optimize the health and well-

being your beloved pet in profound and sustained ways. The health of your

pet is exactly what we pride ourselves on most here at Louisiana Veterinary

Specialists. Since every pet deserves to live a full and happy life, we work

tirelessly to create second chances for pets no matter how common or

atypical the ailment. A second chance at achieving optimal health means a

second chance at living the best life possible, and that’s something that

truly every pet deserves. From orthopedic surgery to neurosurgery and

across dozens of acute surgical procedures, Dr. Jude T. Bordelon delivers a

level of compassionate care and surgical precision that’s simply unavailable

elsewhere in Central Louisiana.

Our specialty hospital and surgery center is the proud home to a dedicated

staff and expanding team. We treat each and every pet that we encounter as

if they were our own, and deliver the type of care that you can depend on

when you need it most. At Louisiana Veterinary Specialists, we believe that

a compassionate touch, combined with advanced surgical procedures can

deliver a profound impact on the overall health of your pet.

When you arrive at our facility, you’ll see firsthand that we’ve got a lot of

heart and a lot of personality. We don’t simply deliver veterinary care; we

work tirelessly to ensure the absolute well-being and comprehensive care of

your pet. We believe that Central Louisiana residents and pet owners across

the state deserve access to expert surgical care. So that’s exactly what we

deliver.

“As a veterinary surgeon, I, Jude T. Bordelon, believe pet owners and the

veterinary community in Louisiana deserve the very best veterinary

specialty health care available. I also believe this care should be readily

available and that this type of care should not be exclusive to one area or

region of the state. It is for these reasons that Louisiana Veterinary

Specialists came to be.”

– Jude T. Bordelon, DVM, MS

Areas of Surgical Expertise

Our primary surgeon, Dr. Jude T. Bordelon, possesses extensive expertise

in the following areas of specialty surgery:

– Orthopedic Surgery

– Neurosurgery

– Soft-Tissue Surgery

– Thoracic Surgery

– Hepatobilliary Surgery

– Surgical Oncology

– Laproscopy

– Thoracoscopy

Each category listed above requires its own level of specialized training and

precision, and each form of surgery, when successfully implemented, can

dramatically improve the quality of life for your pet. Whereas location alone

may have once inhibited or entirely prevented your access to reliable,

expert surgical care, pet owners from both Central Louisiana and across the

greater state now have a truly remarkable resource to ensure the very best

care for your pet. That resource is Louisiana Veterinary Specialists.

ABOUT US

At Louisiana Veterinary Specialists, we believe that a compassionate touch,

combined with advanced surgical procedures can deliver a profound impact

on the overall health of your pet. We’ve created our facility with the strong

belief that every pet owner delivers the absolute standard in specialty care.

Previously, pet owners had to drive for miles across the state of Louisiana

to receive specialty care for their beloved pet. Specialty centers across the

state were concentrated in a single area, leaving a great number of pet

owners in need when it came to receiving precise surgical and diagnostic

care to their pet. By opening our specialty hospital and surgery center in

Broussard, Louisiana, we’ve made our state-of- the-art facilities, advanced

diagnostics and expert veterinary team available to pet owners from far and

wide.

We’re committed to what we do here at Louisiana Veterinary Specialists:

creating second chances for pets when they need it most.

By bringing your pet to Louisiana Veterinary Specialists, you further your

commitment to providing the best possible care to your pet, ensuring a

higher quality of life and treatment with the most advanced medical

diagnostic equipment available today. Our specialists, highly-trained staff

and veterinary expertise enables us to diagnose and treat your pet with

state-of- the-art veterinary technology. Our equipment and coordinated

work allows us to work carefully and comprehensively, leaving no stone

unturned when it comes to diagnosing and treating your pet regardless of

severity or medical history. We also provide each pet with an individual

recovery nurse. This level of individual attention and care ensures that your

pet is treated with remarkable care and attention. To ensure that all

communication is as clear as possible, the recovery nurse that is assigned to

your pet will communicate directly with you every step of the way.

We’ll even help you to master rehabilitative techniques before sending your

pet home, in order to ensure that your pet not only receives comprehensive

care, but that they also sustain their health long after they’ve left our facility

and are back home, safe and sound. It’s our mission at Louisiana Veterinary

Specialists to ensure that your beloved pet leaves both happier and

healthier than when they came. Every pet owner deserves the best

resources available, and every pet deserves the very best care.

MEET DR. BORDELON!

Dr. Jude T. Bordelon grew up in the small town of Hessmer, Louisiana.

Growing up on a small farm and surrounded by a variety of both farm

animals and pets, he began to pursue his passion for science, medicine, and

animals. The combination of these three areas of interest led him to LSU

where he obtained both his undergraduate (’98) and Veterinary School

(’02) degrees.

After graduation, Dr. Bordelon relocated to Stillwater, OK to complete a

grueling one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery

at Oklahoma State University. He remained at Oklahoma State University

to complete a rigorous three-year residency program in small animal

surgery. He did so while pursuing his Masters of Science degree. Upon

successful completion of his residency, he remained at Oklahoma as an

associate professor in small animal surgery for two years.

He later returned to Louisiana in 2008, as a staff surgeon for the Southeast

Veterinary Specialists until 2012. During this time, he completed his

Master's degree ('10) at Oklahoma State and became board certified in the

American College of Veterinary Surgeons as a small animal surgeon.

Following three successful years in practice, he returned to LSU School of

Veterinary Medicine as a visiting professor in small animal surgery from

2012-2013. After his work at LSU, he then re-entered private practice as a

staff surgeon for MedVet, Louisiana from 2013-2016.

Being a native of Louisiana and realizing the need for improved availability

of veterinary specialty health care within the state, Dr. Bordelon has

decided to bring his experiences to Lafayette in order to introduce and

advance veterinary specialty medicine in Acadiana and surrounding areas.

Dr. Bordelon has special interests in innovative techniques involving

orthopedics, neurosurgery, wound healing, reconstruction surgical

techniques, minimally invasive fracture management (MIPO), and other

minimally invasive surgical techniques. He has authored book chapters and

scientific articles as well. Dr. Bordelon has presented lectures and

laboratories at many local, state, regional, and national meetings. He is also

an active member in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons,

American Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Orthopedic Society,

Veterinary Wound Management Society (past-President), the Veterinary

Emergency and Critical Care Society, as well as a variety of other societies

and organizations.

Dr. Bordelon is happily married to Pia Bordelon (a registered veterinary

technician). Together they love spending time with their son and daughter

Peter and Gwyneth. They also have a black lab, Gracie, a terrier mix Olive,

and a cat, Oscar. In his free time, Dr. Bordelon enjoys spending time with

his family and friends, traveling, outdoor activities. He also loves Louisiana

collegiate baseball and Louisiana football at all levels. Dr. Bordelon’s

creation of Louisiana Veterinary Specialists is the end-result of decades of

extensive training and surgical mastery. Dr. Borderlon is extremely proud

of his latest venture, where cutting edge diagnostic and medical science can

contribute directly to the well-being of pets across the state of Louisiana.

“It is here where we will strive to provide the state of the art surgical care,

quality medicine, superior client service, and best communication possible

to you.”

– Jude T. Bordelon, DVM, MS

BEFORE YOU VISIT

We want you to be prepared before you visit, and totally comfortable once

you arrive. Read on to learn some important information on what to bring,

what you can expect during your appointment, and other procedural details

that Louisiana Veterinary Specialists would like you to know.

Referrals & Appointments

At our specialty hospital and surgery center, it’s important to stay as

organized as possible to ensure that we can deliver the most reliable care

available, day after day. We adhere to the following procedures whenever

making an appointment or when admitting a referral and ask that you

adhere to the following procedural protocol:

Appointments are by referral only (including emergencies), and occur

Monday through Friday. Your veterinarian is required to refer your pet

directly to us. Once your pet has successfully been referred, you (not your

veterinarian) must schedule your appointment. In order to ensure that we

provide the absolute standard in patient care, Louisiana Veterinary

Specialists limit new appointments to just a few per day.

Consequently, clients who arrive with a medical emergency will be

transferred to a nearby specialist accordingly.

Before You Arrive

Our specialized surgeon and veterinary staff require that all available

medical information be sent to them before onboarding and diagnosis

begin. This is a crucial piece of the medical process, as the right medical

documents can paint a picture of both past and current health. That’s why

we request that your veterinarian faxes your pet’s comprehensive medical

records prior to your appointment or that you bring them with you on the

day of your appointment. Even if your records are faxed over, you will need

to bring any X-rays with you for our specialized analysis, including films or

CD. Without having these materials available, your pet may be required to

undergo additional X-rays, which can usually be prevented by adherence to

our procedures. Our specialists will be unable to make the best possible

medical decision without receiving comprehensive medical records and X-

rays accordingly.

We also request that you adhere to the following policies and procedures

to ensure that your appointment is a success:

1. Do not feed your pet after 10 p.m. the night prior to your

appointment

2. Provide water at all times to your pet

During Your Visit to Louisiana Veterinary Specialists

We require that the client (or an authorized agent/proxy) making all

medical and financial decisions must be at available firsthand at the

appointment. Our specialists’ consultation is often comprehensive and will

require your attention. Other loved ones or family members involved with

the pet may wish to be present as well.

1. After our specialists examine your pet and review the corresponding

medical records, we’ll recommend a diagnostic and treatment plan

to follow

2. We’ll answer any questions you may have and review costs

associated with surgery and/or treatment

3. We’ll tailor a plan in line with your exact needs and discuss how

long we may need to keep your pet to successfully complete the

procedure

 While Your Pet Is Here

1. We’ll update you and your veterinarian regularly with your pet’s

status, our findings, and any recommendations or follow-ups we

may have during their stay.

2. We also encourage visits as they can help to alleviate stress

associated with a procedure and provide a nice boost to both you

and your pet! Simply call us during our regular business hours to

schedule a visit. We’ll set a convenient time to visit without

compromising other patients’ care and ensure you get to see your

pet!

3. We pride ourselves on providing the standard in advanced

veterinary care. That’s why we treat your pet as if they were our

own. Simply let us know if there is anything we can do to help you

further and we’ll do our very best to accommodate you.

Discharge

After a procedure or comprehensive surgery has been completed, we’ll

schedule an appointment to discharge your pet. At this time, we will review

home care instructions (including rehabilitative techniques) medications,

and discuss follow-up recommendations we may have to further enhance

and optimize the recovery of your pet. We’ll be happy to answer any

questions you may have, and will review your bill, collect payment, and

schedule a follow-up appointment as required.

To keep your pet’s whole medical team in the loop, we will update your

family veterinarian with a comprehensive written report detailing their stay

and medical procedures.

 After You Go Home

1. We’ll call to inform you as soon as pending lab results come in

2. We’ll review test results, monitor your pet’s progress, and make

follow-up recommendations as needed.

3. We’ll be available to you and your veterinarian for ongoing concerns

and questions. We know that recovery can be a process unto itself,

so we make ourselves available every step along the way.

Hospital Payment Policy

We require that all services be paid as rendered. We accept MasterCard®,

Visa®, American Express®, Discover®, CareCredit®, checks, and cash.

We will require deposits in most cases, and are happy to answer any

questions you may have about our procedures and associated expenses.

A powerful bond begins to form, and it grows stronger every day. Our four-legged family members connect us to friends with their own pets. Together, we’ve built an extended family tree with a powerful central component: West Loop Veterinary Care.

West Loop Veterinary Care was founded to provide exceptional care for pets and outstanding service to those who love them. I’m very proud of our veterinary practice and that our full-service animal hospitals patient care has earned us a prestigious accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA); recognition only 15% of US veterinary hospitals achieve.

Extended Examinations. “Routine” exams are more than simply routine at West Loop. They last a little longer so we can listen carefully to you while closely examining and treating your pet at our state-of-the-art animal hospital. At our animal clinic we believe comprehensive examinations are the core components to optimized veterinary care. Better discussion and enhanced observation leads to better results.

Advanced Medical Care. Our animal hospital features a dental and oral surgery suite, a separate dedicated surgery suite, digital radiography and an in-house laboratory to speed up test results. We are also proud of our comprehensive in-house pharmacy, which allows prescription treatments to begin instantly.

From an early age, Dr. Gonsky showed an affinity for animals. In fact, his mother says that the first word he spoke was the name of the family dog. That love of animals caught up with him as he began pursuing a major in business at Indiana University. Realizing that working with animals was his life’s passion, he decided to shift gears and pursue a major in pre-med with an eye on attending Veterinary School. After serving as president of his class at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Gonsky began an impressive career that has led to the opening of West Loop Veterinary Care.

Dr. Gonsky’s more than 12 years of veterinary medical care experience includes Blum Animal Hospital, Chicago, Ill.; LePar Animal Hospital, Evergreen Park, Ill.; and Dr. Gonsky’s Chicago Veterinary Housecalls, Chicago, Ill. During this early part of his career, Dr. Gonsky developed a profound interest in internal medicine and gained practical awareness of natural and alternative medicine and treatment. His knowledge, skills and experience helped him in the design and creation of West Loop Veterinary Care. When he’s not at West Loop Veterinary Care, Dr. Gonsky enjoys spending his free time with his family.

As a child, Dr. Boling could usually be found surrounded by animals. When not spending time with the family Golden Retriever, Barney, he was frequently pet-sitting the neighborhood dogs. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated Summa cum Laude with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Computer Engineering. Eighteen months later, Dr. Boling started his own technology company, which eventually provided special effects systems to the television industry, including CNN, ESPN, Fox, and Univision. Despite the exciting nature of technology, Dr. Boling knew something was missing. After some soul searching, Dr. Boling re-discovered his real passion – caring for cats and dogs. In 2004, he sold his business and entered veterinary school at the University of Georgia, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 2008. During vet school, Dr. Boling focused his studies on small animals.

Prior to joining West Loop Veterinary Care, Dr. Boling worked at small animal hospitals in both Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia. There, he also worked with several dog and cat rescue organizations providing care ranging from vaccinations, spay and neutering, to treating emergency patients. His particular areas of interest include internal medicine, neurology, and feline medicine. Dr. Boling is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) and the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).

When not working, Dr. Boling enjoys time at the gym, playing tennis, and going to the movies. He especially enjoys time with his partner and their cats.

Dr. Emily Yacker developed a love of animals at an early age, but she didn’t always plan on becoming a veterinarian.

Growing up in Maryland, Dr. Yacker rode horses and shared her home with several golden retriever dogs. When it came time for college, Dr. Yacker decided to pursue a degree in finance at Miami University. Upon graduation, Dr. Yacker began working as a business consultant, a career she followed for several years.

During her years in business, Dr. Yacker volunteered at local animal shelters. Realizing that animal care was her true passion, Dr. Yacker left the corporate world to become a veterinarian. She is a 2013 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, where she received her DVM.

Dr. Yacker recognizes that animals can be hard to read and they often hide signs of illness. She likes to help give sick animals a voice by detecting subtle clues to their illness through examinations and diagnostics.

Dr. Yacker also focuses on effective communication with owners. By taking the time to talk with owners, she can help them understand the intricacies of disease, and hopefully alleviate their concerns and anxiety when their pet is ill.

Dr. Yacker is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) and the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). She has a special interest in canine medicine, including dermatology, geriatric medicine and behavior. Dr. Yacker lives in Chicago with her husband and son. They regularly open their home to foster dogs.

We’re very happy to report that Dr. McFadden has gotten married. We’re not so happy to report that she has moved outside of Chicago to join her husband. We will miss her greatly and wish her all the best!

West Loop Veterinary Care was designed with environmentally sustainable practices in mind. As guardians of our pets and also the planet we share, we’ve created an environmentally friendly facility that is both good for your pet and good for our planet.

Our animal clinic has been designed to utilize energy efficient elements including brick walls, high ceilings and large windows for natural lighting. Other green efforts include: the use of Low VOC paints, GREENGUARD® counter tops, hot water piping insulation and re-circulating pumps. We conserve water with the use of front-loading washing machines, dual-flush toilets, hand-towels and cloth rags instead of paper towels and low-flow aerators.

Our electronic medical records and in-house recycling program minimize the use of paper and West Loop Animal Hospital responsibly recycles what we do use.

Our cleaning products are environmentally friendly, hygienically safe for animals and biodegradable in nature. We will continue to seek additional ways to enhance our Green practices. West Loop Veterinary Care is committed to delivering you optimal, compassionate care in an environmentally sustainable manner!

Our clients never hesitate to tell us how our dedication, teamwork and caring approach has made choosing Pinellas Animal Hospital an easy choice.

We are also proud to offer a Preventative Health Care Plan which allows for interest free, easy installments to occur over the course of 12 months. This payment method helps our clients to pay for routine but necessary services like vaccinations, bloodwork, dental procedures and more. We believe in pet care that’s affordable, without sacrificing excellence. We’ll work with you to ensure that your pet can receive access to the best veterinary service available.

Our Preventative Health Care Plan is one way that we ensure that local pet owners receive access to routine veterinary care.

We welcome you to call us at any time to learn more about our wide range of services, our preventative health care plan and our commitment to you and your pet.

OUR SERVICES

Our veterinary hospital is proud to offer a wide range of veterinary services to ensure that your pet stays in optimal health, year-round. Whether you’re visiting us for a routine checkup or for a more intensive procedure, you can trust that our service, attention to detail and approach to personalized, compassionate care puts your pet in the very best hands.

We know that caring for a pet can be hard work, so we aim to make it just a little bit easier by offering a wide range of services for your convenience.

Read on to learn more about these specific services and if they may be right for your pet!

Wellness Care

At Pinellas Animal Hospital, we believe that regular wellness visits are an integral part of maintaining optimal overall health. When you and your pet visit us regularly for wellness care visits, it allows us to check your pet from head to tail for any existing issues, while also allowing for early detection of ailments such as dental disease, diabetes, arthritis, spinal issues, heart disease and more.

Since a healthy pet is a happy pet, we encourage you to schedule your next appointment soon and maintain a consistent schedule when it comes to the care of your pet!

Preventative Care

A perfect counterpart to routine wellness care is a comprehensive approach to preventative care. This may include vaccinations, parasite prevention, nutrition, wellness counseling or any other approaches to personalized, preventative care that adds vitality and stamina to the life of your pet.

It’s impossible to know when an acute issue may occur, so regular veterinary visits and access to our four veterinarians help us to implement proactive and effective approaches to preventative care.

Whether you’d like to update your pet’s medical records and vaccinations, or to discuss a specific issue, our veterinarians and staff are available and ready to help you achieve optimal health for your beloved pet.

Surgical Care

At Pinellas Animal Hospital, over forty years of veterinary experience allow us to practice the cutting-edge of veterinary medicine, whether there’s an issue big or small.

From routine spays and neuters to more complex and intensive surgical procedures, we’re prepared with modern diagnostic techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to perform successful, precise surgical procedures when your pet needs them most.

In-House Laboratory

For rapid access to crucial diagnostic information, our experienced technician team has the ability to perform all aspects of medical testing within our comprehensive In-House laboratory at Pinellas Animal Hospital.

This decreases turnaround times that may be required if we were to send samples off-site and ensures that time-sensitive tests receive comprehensive analysis in an expedited manner.

Pharmacy

At Pinellas Animal Hospital, we maintain a comprehensive inventory of veterinary pharmaceuticals and medications needed to ensure that your pet makes a full recovery. We’ll take a personalized approach to prescribing medicine to your pet and will do everything in our power to optimize their overall health with the right combination of attentive care and medicine.

Ultrasound

When looking to gain deep insight into the health of your pet with as little impact as possible, ultrasound is an extremely useful solution.

Ultrasonography allows for detailed internal images to be generated of your pet, without the use of radiation. Ultrasonography is an entirely non-invasive and pain free way to both evaluate and diagnose a multitude of potential health issues found in your pet. As with all of our veterinary services, if you have any questions about our approach to ultrasonography, equipment used, associated costs or anything else, simply give us a call at 727-546-0005 to learn more.

Digital Radiology

When a physical examination and routine bloodwork doesn’t provide enough insight, our state-of-the-art radiology services will give us additional information needed to assess the overall health and well-being of your pet. Digital Radiology allows our veterinarians to utilize X-rays to achieve crucial insight and helps to paint a detailed portrait of the internal health of your pet.

Dentistry

Good dental care is an imperative part of overall pet care. Whether it’s for a routine cleaning or for a fractured tooth, tooth root abscess, extraction, gum disease prevention or other, Pinellas Animal Hospital has both the equipment and expertise needed to ensure that your pet both achieves and maintains optimal dental health. We also recommend giving your pet dental chews in-between visits and requesting a teeth cleaning when you come in for your preventative care visits!

Boarding

Whether you’re leaving town for the holidays or simply need a break from it all, we’ve got your back! Pinellas Animal Hospital is proud to offer a range of boarding services, with a flexible and open schedule to meet your needs.

Pets that board with us will have the use of our spacious backyard to exercise, along with personalized care and the same tender level of attention that we proudly extend to our own pets!

To learn more about our boarding procedures and if they might be right for your next trip or vacation, please give us a call at 727-546-0005!

Grooming

If you’re visiting for a routine wellness checkup or other procedure, why not enroll our expert certified groomer to groom your pet while you’re at it! Our attention to detail and customized approach will ensure that your pet’s coat is full of luster and looking like a million bucks before they leave our veterinary facility!

If you have absolutely any questions about our wide range of veterinary services, the equipment used, associated costs, or if you wish to schedule your next appointment, contact us to learn more and we’ll get back to you on the same day unless otherwise specified.

We thank you for your interest in Pinellas Animal Hospital and we can’t wait to deliver our level of personalized, tender care to your beloved pet!

Wellness Care

At West Oaks Animal Hospital, we believe that wellness care, including preventative care, is a crucial piece of the puzzle when it comes to optimizing overall health. By bringing in your pet to see us regularly, it allows us to screen them for potential issues before they might become problematic and helps to ensure that your pet is on pace to live a long, healthy and happy life!

Our approach to wellness care allows us to detect and treat potential ailments such as diabetes, arthritis, spinal issues, heart disease, dental issues and much more. We encourage you to contact us to learn about our approach to wellness care and our ongoing dedication to serving your pet with the highest level of service and tenderness possible.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an absolutely imperative piece of overall health and a central component of preventative care within veterinary medicine. Our approach to vaccinations takes the entire health history of your pet into account, in order to create a highly-tailored approach to comprehensive care that best serves your pet.

Our vaccination protocols exist on the cutting-edge of veterinary medicine and our commitment to continuing education also ensures that each recommendation is made with the latest advents of veterinary science in mind.

Allergy & Dermatology

Just like you or your loved ones may experience from time to time, pets can also experience seasonal discomfort, acute allergies and skin issues. These issues can include rashes, irritated skin, persisting itchiness, dry skin or many other issues.

At West Oaks Animal Hospital, our approach to the health of your pet ensures that they stay cool, calm and protected from any problematic skin issues that may arise!

Arthritis & Pain Management

Just as with our wide range of veterinary services, our approach to arthritis and pain management takes a holistic view of the issue and its impact on your pet’s health. We’ll look at the acute issues being experienced and develop an individualized approach toward caring for your pet.

If your pet is having trouble moving or is visibly displaying pain of any kind, it’s time to take them to West Oaks Animal Hospital so that we can create a course of action that improves both the mobility and comfort of your pet!

Dentistry

Our veterinarians and staff strongly encourage our clients to take an active interest in the dental health of their pet, an area that is often overlooked. By brushing your pet’s teeth regularly and administering dental chews as an ongoing part of their routine, you can help to prevent dental issues that may compound and harm your pet over time.

At West Oaks Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer a thorough cleaning of your pet’s teeth and additional dental care solutions on an as-needed basis. Bring in your pet soon and keep them smiling all year round!

Radiology

Modern advancements in radiology allow for unparalleled insight into the health and well-being of your pet. High-definition X-rays can often be a crucial diagnostic tool for a huge range of pet conditions, allowing us additional insight toward the health of your pet that simply can’t be achieved through more standard blood tests and diagnostics.

Ultrasounds

As opposed to X-rays, ultrasonography does not use radiation and can be an incredible way to achieve additional insight into the health of your pet. Often, ultrasonography is an ideal solution when pet owners desire a non-invasive and painless way to both evaluate and diagnose a wide range of medical ailments.

As always, if you have questions about our ultrasound procedures, the benefits of this tool or if it may be appropriate for your pet, we invite you to contact us directly!

Laboratory

As a central component of our comprehensive service offerings, West Oaks Animal Hospital is also proud of our In-house laboratory so that important tests and analysis can be run on-site.

This ensures that pressing issues and time-sensitive analysis occurs rapidly, allowing us to gain insight into the health of your pet with as little downtime as possible. This is all a part of our commitment toward the well-being of your pet and the superior offerings for our clients that we believe in at West Oaks Animal Hospital!

Dermatology

Much like our “Allergy & Dermatology” offerings, our specialized dermatology services take a focused approach toward the health of your pet’s skin, ensuring that you’ve got the tools and medications needed to ensure the utmost comfort for your pet throughout the seasons. Whether your pet is experiencing a specific skin issue or you simply want to optimize the look, feel and comfort of your pet, West Oaks Animal Hospital has the tools to help.

Nutritional Counseling

A proper diet, regular exercise and optimal nutritional intake is also an imperative part of overall health. By visiting us at West Oaks Animal Hospital and taking part in our personalized, nutritional counseling sessions, you’ll help to set the course for your pet’s long-term health.

We can help you to hit a target weight for your pet and ensure that their daily nutritional needs are being met as well! We encourage you to inquire about this service and see the wide range of benefits it can have.

Weight Management

Weight gain in your pet can be healthy when they are reaching maturity, but too much weight gain can lead to a whole array of health issues and complications down the line.

For approaches toward weight management and strategies to maximize the overall health of your pet, consult with our expert veterinarians directly! Our proven techniques, nutritional insights and personalized approach toward pet care will help your pet hit their ideal weight and gain long-term health benefits in the process.

Pharmacy / Online Pharmacy & Store

At West Oaks Animal Hospital, we take great pride in the comprehensive offerings of both our In-House pharmacy as well as our online pharmacy, allowing your pet unparalleled access to the latest and most progressive treatments available in the field of veterinary medicine. With both top veterinary medicines, as well as their generic counterparts available at your convenience, you can rest assured that your pet will make a speedy recovery with everything they need to achieve absolutely optimal health.

When treating a chronic condition, a short-term illness or any other ailment, you can count on our veterinarians personalized approach to prescribing and recommending medicine to ensure that your pet has their prescription filled promptly and precisely, so that they can return to full strength as soon as possible.

Microchipping

Unfortunately, many pets are either lost or stolen each year. Even more tragic is the fact that many of these cases can be prevented. It’s this dedication to prevention that allows us to offer microchipping as one of our highly-recommended services.

Microchipping will allow you to register your pet within a national database that drastically increases the number of pets that are reunited with their owners. This simple preventative technique can ensure that you and your beloved pet stay close together, no matter what.

Pet Boarding

Yet another component of our comprehensive approach to care and service offerings for your pet is our pet boarding service!

MEET OUR VETERINARIANS & STAFF!

Amira Abdel-Malek, BVMS MPH

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Amira Abdel-Malek is the daughter of a Registered Nurse and a Doctor of Internal Medicine. Having such a medical-oriented family must have had an impact, but it was her love of animals and wanting to help and heal them that fueled her desire to become a veterinarian. Growing up, she was known around the neighborhood for having a personal “zoo”, which consisted of a rabbit, hamsters, mice, a rat, turtles, fish, a snake, various species of birds, as well as the usual fare of dogs and cats.
As a child, she was a great fan of mysteries and detective shows which she watched with her grandmother and brother. Inevitably, those “Who Dun It” plots fueled her desire to uncover the unknown and early on she realized that this skill was appropriate for this particular branch of medicine, due to animals being unable to speak for themselves. This desire, in addition to her innate love of animals, solidified her life-long goal to become a veterinarian.

In 2005, Amira received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University in College Station. She then went on to receive a Master in Public Health in the fields of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at TAMU School of Rural Public Health in 2007. Wanting the chance to travel and to gain more cultural and life experiences along with her veterinary education, she decided to move to Scotland and earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Science (a DVM equivalent degree) at the AVMA-accredited University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. There, she also took the oath that allowed her to become a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS), which allows her to practice veterinary medicine (almost) anywhere in the world.

As part of the 5-year veterinary program curriculum, she was required to complete over 25 weeks of externships, some of which she decided to complete here in her hometown to be near family and friends. This allowed for some great mentor-relationships which led her back to employment here.

As the lead, full-time veterinarian at West Oaks Animal Hospital, Dr. Abdel-Malek diagnoses and treats diseases and disorders in animals. She is resolute about client education and advising owners on how to take care of their animals. In doing so, it enables her to not only protect the animal’s well-being and health, but also the people that love them. In small animal veterinary medicine, Dr. Abdel-Malek is most interested in soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and pain management, especially in the geriatric patient, as they can be ‘silent sufferers’.

In her spare time, she enjoys getting lost in a great mystery, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
She has said that has been to every continent except for Australia and Antarctica. And one day she hopes to be able to just say that she has been to every continent. Dr. Abdel-Malek’s “zoo” now consists of only one flame-point cameo cat named Han Solo, but she plans on expanding soon.

Michelle M. Ragsdale DVM CVPP CCRP CVMA

Dr. Ragsdale graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. She has worked in various private practices as an associate and relief veterinarian until 2010, when she decided to pursue veterinary pain management as a full-time career.

Dr. Ragsdale is proud to be a member of the inaugural class of Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioners recognized by the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management. In addition, Dr. Ragsdale is also certified in Canine Rehabilitation and Veterinary Medical Acupuncture.

In her spare time, she enjoys training and competing with her 3 Labradors, Golden Retriever and Border Collie in competitive obedience, agility, conformation, hunt tests and tracking. She and her husband also have 3 parrots that are part of their family.

Nicole, Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Practice Manager

Nicole had always thought she would wind up in the human medical field, and even started college with the goal of becoming a registered nurse. During her first semester, her neighbor suggested she look into veterinary medicine. From that moment on, Nicole’s entire perspective changed—she hasn’t looked back since! Nicole is proud to serve as the Practice Manager of West Oaks Animal Hospital.

Nicole is originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it was in her home state that her veterinary journey began. She started working for local animal hospitals in 1996, then moved to Texas with her husband in 2000 to attend veterinary technology classes. She graduated from Tomball College in 2004, then passed her state and national board examinations to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Now, Nicole has been serving pets and their loving owners in the Houston area for over 15 years!

Nicole wears many hats here at West Oaks Animal Hospital. In addition to her role as Practice Manager, she gladly takes on duties as an anesthesiologist, phlebotomist, radiation technician, receptionist, laboratory technician, dental assistant, and much more! Above all, Nicole enjoys working to improve the lives of the area’s animal owners and pets on a daily basis.

Along with her husband of 17 years, Josh, and their two sons, Billy and Jacques, Nicole shares her life with an elderly dog named Lizzie; a senior cat who goes by Clara; and a kitten that the boys named Skippy Jon Jones. Much of Nicole’s free time is spent attending her sons’ sports activities, chaperoning school trips, and taking her boys to Cub Scouts activities. She also enjoys staying active in her local church, going walking and camping in the great outdoors, and exploring her crafty side through painting, needlepoint, and Pinterest craft projects.

Candyce, Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
Even as a baby, Candyce had an innate passion for animals that hasn’t let up to this day. She knew that she’d like to become an animal-care professional before she was aware that the veterinary field existed! Now, she’s able to serve as an advocate for pets every day as one of West Oaks Animal Hospital’s Veterinary Technicians.

Candyce grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Houston about five years ago. She started attending the Vet Tech Institute in 2013, and graduated with her Associate’s degree in veterinary technology in the fall of 2015. As a Licensed Veterinary Technician here at the hospital, Candyce particularly enjoys preparing vaccinations, taking radiographs, assisting in surgeries, and performing thorough dental cleanings.

At home, Candyce and her beautiful daughter Chloé—already just as big of an animal-lover as her mother—share their lives with a few pets of their own. They have Sasha, a rescued black Labrador; a rescued rabbit named Scarlet; and Bubbles, a goldfish that Chloé received for her excellent grades in school.

When she isn’t spending time with family or tending to the pets of Houston here at the clinic, Candyce likes reading, studying, and watching fashion tutorials. She tries to live every day by her personal motto: “You can never be over-dressed or over-educated!”

Bria, Veterinary Technician
Bria is a pet owner herself, and has never taken for granted the unbridled love, loyalty, and companionship our animal friends offer us—she’s adored animals ever since she can remember. Bria now cares for pets professionally as a member of the West Oaks Animal Hospital family!

A native of Beaumont, Texas, Bria attended school at the Vet Tech Institute here in Houston to earn her degree in veterinary technology. She has special medical interests in catheter placement, jugular blood draws, and anesthesia monitoring. Bria also likes working directly with the clinic’s boarded pets, and has a passion for exotic-animal medicine.

In her time away from work, Bria enjoys reading, drawing, going for long walks, working on puzzles, and spending time with her own pets at home. She lives with a pit bull and a loveable Persian cat.

Samantha, Client Service Specialist
Samantha has enjoyed animal care and problem-solving ever since she was a little girl. On her fifth birthday, her fate was sealed—she witnessed her mother’s horse give birth to a foal, and has known ever since that the field of veterinary medicine was where she needed to be. Samantha’s passion simply never wavered!

Samantha grew up in Pennsylvania and Florida, and first began her veterinary journey at a clinic in Boca Raton. Next, she moved to Texas and gained more hands-on experience in hospitals here. In April of 2016, Samantha joined the West Oaks Animal Hospital family and has happily served the area’s pets and their owners ever since. Her favorite part of every shift is interacting one-on-one with animal parents and their furry companions.

At home, Samantha and her fiancé, Brian, have two young children named Kiera and Brandon and also share their lives with Ziggy, an African Grey parrot. In her spare time, she enjoys dabbling in art, going to the beach, wakeboarding, and horseback riding. Samantha also remains active in horse training and even works to rehabilitate horses who have been physically or mentally abused!

Reagan, Veterinary Assistant
Reagan remembers feeling the urge to help animals even when she was a young girl—whenever a family pet or a friend’s animal companion fell ill, she was always on the scene to help in the treatment and recovery process. For Reagan, it was clear early on that she would be well-suited for a career in the veterinary world!

Reagan was born and raised here in Houston, and attended Stephen F. Austin State University to earn her botany degree before signing on with the Animal Behavior College to study veterinary technology. Now, she’s a Veterinary Assistant with the West Oaks Animal Hospital team, and feels fortunate to put her knowledge and skillset to good use every day by helping the area’s pets and animal owners.
Away from the clinic, Reagan enjoys reading, fishing and hiking in the great outdoors, staying active as a member of the Girl Scouts organization, and spending time with her family at home. They share their lives with a pit bull mix, Harley, as well as a loveable cat named Reeses.

With decades of accrued experience and a deep commitment to personalized veterinary care, our entire team of veterinarians and staff is proud of our work and excited to deliver our outstanding level of service directly to both you and your pet!

difference in our pet care firsthand!

OUR STORY

The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital was first established in 2012,

when Dr. Thurmond saw the need for a larger veterinary facility that

would serve the many needs of pet owners from across the state of

Texas. Initially based in a simple 1,800 square foot facility, The

WellPet Center soon blossomed into a thriving practice run by three

outstanding veterinarians, renowned for their compassionate

veterinary care that quickly gained a reputation across the region.

In January 2016, Dr. Thurmond, as well as his team of veterinarians

and staff moved the veterinary practice into a stunning, 10,000

square foot facility so that they could finally fulfill a vision for an even

more innovative and accommodating veterinary center, fully

equipped with multiple suites, boarding facilities, cutting-edge

equipment and much more. This facility would be the brand-new

WellPet Center, which now boasts some of the most comprehensive

and high-tech accommodations found anywhere across the state.

WellPet Center is fully equipped with five examination rooms, 40

separate kennels, an independent grooming suite, a comprehensive

in-house pharmacy, a state-of- the-art laboratory for quick

turnaround diagnostic and bloodwork, a surgical suite, a radiology

suite and a treatment room!

Since transitioning into our newer veterinary facility, we’ve been

thrilled with the result. Possessing everything we need to deliver

absolutely optimal care, both the proud pet owners and beloved pets

of Katy, Texas and beyond have unparalleled access to some of the

best veterinary care in the area. With compassionate, client-based

veterinary care at the core of our mission and vision at The WellPet

Center, we’re thrilled with the ability to care for your pets, while

helping them to live to their fullest potential!

The WellPet Center is also dedicated to ensuring your absolute

comfort while you visit! Our facility is equipped with a 42-inch cable

television, so that you can sit back and relax while you wait. Crack

into a complimentary soda and watch your favorite channel while we

take care of your beloved pet. Now that’s what we call service! Join us

at The WellPet Center and gain instant access to a wide range of

veterinary services that includes everything from general wellness

care to advanced radiology and ultrasound, microchipping, boarding,

grooming and more.

OUR VETERINARY SERVICES

? Wellness Care

At The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital, we believe in routine

wellness care as an imperative piece of the puzzle that is

comprehensive pet care! We encourage you to set up an appointment

with our veterinary hospital so that we can screen your pet for

potential issues and ensure that their progression through various life

stages is occurring as it should!

Visiting early and often can prevent conditions like arthritis, diabetes,

heart disease, dental issues and a whole series of other ailments that

can occur when wellness visits are skipped or otherwise overlooked.

We encourage you to contact us today to schedule your next

appointment and ensure that your pet has access to the best pet care

available!

? Vaccinations

Each pet is different and thus, has a different need for vaccinations

and approaches to preventative health. Before vaccinating your pet,

we will take their entire health history into consideration and create a

customized approach to their care. You can also rest assured that as

with all of our services, our approach to veterinary care is in

accordance with the latest advancements in veterinary science and

will help to create the trajectory for a long and happy life for your pet!

As always, if you have any questions or comments whatsoever about

our vaccinations or any of our other services, we invite you to contact

us directly.

? Allergy & Dermatology

Seasonal or environmental issues can crop up from time to time and

cause difficulties for your pet. Whether it’s itching or an acute allergy

that’s developed, Dr. Thurmond and our expert staff will take the

proper steps to evaluate your pet and pinpoint the issue at hand.

Treating the allergies of your pet can help to alleviate discomfort and

significantly improve the quality of life experienced by your pet. To

learn more, be sure to contact our veterinary hospital today and we’ll

be happy to discuss your options!

? Arthritis & Pain Management

Good health for your pet means looking good and feeling good, both

inside and out! Unfortunately, arthritis and chronic pain conditions

impact countless pets each year and can seriously hinder both the

movement and quality of life for your pet.

If you see that your pet is experiencing hindered mobility or is

displaying any other type of pain, we encourage you to contact us so

that we can create and implement an approach to recovery for your

pet!

? Dentistry

Dental health is often overlooked by many pet owners, but serves as

an important indicator of overall health. We recommend that you

regularly brush your pet’s teeth, administer dental chews and bring in

your pet for routine dental examinations as an effective approach to

dental health.

Our veterinary hospital is proud of our comprehensive and

personalized approach to dental care and we encourage you to keep

your pet smiling year after year by bringing them in for a visit!

? Radiology

Radiology allows our veterinarians to achieve deep insight into the

health and inner-workings of your pet. X-rays serve as an important

diagnostic component of health evaluation and ensures that no issue

goes overlooked. When standard bloodwork and diagnostic

evaluations only provide an overview, radiology often allows us to go

the extra mile and pinpoint the exact issue at hand. Contact us today

to learn more about our radiology services!

? Ultrasound

The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital also takes great pride in our

advanced approach toward ultrasonography, which requires the use

of absolutely no radiation, yet still delivers profound insight into the

health of your pet. If you’re looking for as little impact as possible

when it comes to achieving insight toward the health of your pet,

ultrasonography might just be the solution you’ve been looking for.

? Laboratory

When we expanded into our current 10,000 square foot facility, we

were able to build an in-house laboratory in addition to the multitude

of suites contained in our veterinary hospital. By building this

laboratory in-house, it allows us to dramatically decrease turnaround

times that are often needed to process bloodwork, urinalysis and

other diagnostic tests that help us to understand the true and

comprehensive health of your pet!

When you join our family at The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital,

you also gain access to our huge range of veterinary facilities and the

quick turnaround times that come with a state-of- the-art facility such

as our own.

? Dermatology

We want your pet to stay cool and calm, and so do you! However,

itching, dry skin, rashes and other issues can often create issues for

pets, much like they do humans. We can examine your pet for any

dermatological issues that may be persistently bothering your pet.

Whether we need to prescribe a topical medicine or another solution,

we will work to ensure the total health and comfort of your pet!

? Nutritional Counseling

Your pet requires the right nutritional diet to stay happy and healthy.

We can look at your pet’s age, weight and health history to decide

which dietary steps will be right for them and which foods are the

most beneficial choices for you to stock up on at your home! Our

approach to nutritional counseling takes the entire health history of

your pet into account and helps to ensure that no matter what stage of

life your pet is in, they have access to the right dietary choices that

meets their needs.

? Weight Management

While a young and growing cat or dog should experience a certain

degree of weight gain, too much weight gain in a mature adult pet can

be problematic for overall health, digestion, joints, mobility and so

much more. In conjunction with our nutritional counseling service,

we can help your pet to approach weight management and achieve

the target weight that is right for them.

? Pharmacy / Online Pharmacy & Store

Alongside our in-house laboratory and other state-of- the-art service

offerings, we are also proud to offer an in-house pharmacy and online

store for your convenience. With both top of the line prescription

medicines and their generic counterparts readily available, this

service helps to ensure that your pet has access to the medicines

needed to ensure a total and full recovery.

By utilizing our online pharmacy and store, you can refill

prescriptions and select medicines from the convenience and comfort

of your own home. Regardless of whether you’re treating a chronic

condition, a seasonal allergy, or any other type of medical ailment,

our team of veterinarians will help you to find the right medicine

needed for your pet. We’ll also check prescriptions against the health

history of your pet to ensure that it’s the best choice possible and fill

prescriptions as promptly as possible.

? Microchipping

Tragically, countless pets are lost each year. However, the fact of the

matter is that a great number of these cases could have been

prevented if only a pet had been fitted with a microchip.

Microchipping allows your pet to be registered and selectively tracked

within a nationally registered database, ensuring that if they leave

your home, you can find exactly where they are.

To ensure that your pet stays with your family and to prevent the

possibility of loss in the future, we encourage you to ask our

veterinarians and specialists about microchipping your pet at your

next appointment!

? Boarding

Whether you’re headed out of the country or simply out of town, The

WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital is extremely proud to host 40

separate kennels for boarding, in addition to our grooming suite,

pharmacy and other accommodations. Our boarding service

guarantees personalized, compassionate care and attention for your

beloved pet while you’re away and ensures that they receive the very

best care. If you have any questions regarding our boarding

accommodations, rates or additional policies, feel free to give us a call

or email us today!

? Grooming

At WellPet Center, our certified grooming service will have your pet’s

coat glowing and full of luster by the time they leave our facility! Pets

absolutely love our grooming service and the way it makes them feel,

from head to tail! If you’re coming in for a routine checkup or other

service, consider our grooming service as a perfect complement to a

For a comprehensive list of our current service offerings, please see below:

General Care & Wellness

It’s important to have your pet’s health evaluated on at least an annual

basis, so that we can achieve insight into your pet’s general health and well-

being. We also encourage you to visit our veterinary hospital regularly so

that we can achieve a baseline evaluation of your pet’s health and set goals

for optimizing the health of your pet into the foreseeable future.

Visiting us regularly allows us to detect potential conditions that can

become severe problems down the road, if left unattended. These issues

include heart disease, dental disease, cataracts, diabetes, arthritis, spinal

issues and much more. General wellness visits work hand in hand with our

approach to preventative care, making sure that your pet is strong, healthy

and equipped for a long lifespan.

Even if your pet is currently in good health, bringing your pet in to see Dr.

Weeks allows us to ensure that there are no hidden issues and that your pet

is on the road to a long and happy life! We’re proud to provide general care

services for pets from across Maui and meeting your pet soon helps to

ensure that we can create the framework for a long and prosperous future

for your pet.

If you haven’t stopped by yet, we hope that you’ll visit soon or call us to

schedule your next appointment.

Preventative Care

Pet owners often forget that when a pet is already in optimal health or

recovering from an existing issue, it’s an ideal time to focus on preventative

care. Preventative care solutions can range from dietary suggestions to

vaccinations and dental care solutions that can provide health benefits for

your pet both now and well into the future!

At Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital, we believe strongly in finding lasting

solutions that will benefit the health of your pet and we encourage you to

visit us to learn more about our preventative care solutions. Taking the

right approach to preventative care can help you to ensure that your pet is

squared away with vaccinations and on the road to a long and healthy life.

A healthy pet is a happy pet and a clean bill of health is only a visit away!

Ultrasounds

At Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital, we’re proud of our state-of- the-art

technology, which allows us to gain incredible insight into the overall health

and well-being of your pet.

Ultrasounds often prove to be one of the most useful tools within advanced

veterinary medicine, allowing us to see internal images and inner-workings

of your pet that would otherwise be impossible!

Unlike X-rays, ultrasonography does not use radiation and is entirely non-

invasive. This makes it a painless way to evaluate and diagnose a wide

range of potentially harmful medical issues, before they become

problematic. If you have any questions about our ultrasounds or other

approaches to comprehensive pet care, we hope that you’ll get in touch

soon! We’re more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Pet Boarding

We’re proud to offer pet boarding for pet owners who may be traveling or

otherwise unable to care for their pet for a specific duration of time.

At Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital, your pet will enjoy lush, grassy yards to

play in, comfortable kennels with advanced technology to prevent potential

health issues and specialized attention throughout their stay.

Our exceptional approach to pet care, accompanied with a personalized

touch, ensures that your pet will have a fantastic time while you’re away

and will be provided with absolutely everything that they need for a happy

and healthy stay.

Critical Care

We are proud to possess a level of technology and the extensive veterinary

expertise required to offer care even in dire or critical situations. In cases of

critical care, when your pet needs the absolute most attentive, precise care

available, Maui Lani is proud to offer critical care capabilities during our

normal hours of operation.

Our veterinary hospital comes equipped with a temperature controlled

oxygen unit for critical care patients and IV pumps that can administer the

proper medications both day and night. These capabilities ensure that we

can manage care and control an environment even in the most sensitive

conditions. With a level of comprehensive veterinary expertise and state-of-

the-art solutions, we’re proud to provide critical care to your pet when they

need it most.

Dentistry

Dental care can be an extremely important and frequently overlooked

component of comprehensive pet care. We encourage that our clients brush

their pet’s teeth regularly, and also administer dental chews alongside other

commonly practiced preventative dental techniques. We are proud to

recommend special dental-conscious diets on an as-needed basis as well.

We also offer a thorough cleaning and evaluation when your pet needs a

more intensive level of dental care. Additionally, there may be times when

your pet requires more intensive dental treatment. This might occur for

periodontal and gum disease, a fractured tooth, tooth root abscess or even

an extraction.

Whether your pet has a dental need that’s big or small, Maui Lani

Veterinary Hospital is proud to have both the tools and the expertise to

deliver exceptional care and ensure that your pet maintains optimal dental

health. If you have a question about our dentistry pricing or range of

common procedures, we hope that you’ll get in touch with us directly.

Keep your pet smiling by maintaining their oral care!

Vaccinations

When it comes to preventative care, vaccinations play a crucial role in

making sure that your pet is equipped to tackle anything that may come

their way! We make sure to tailor our approach to pet care and vaccinations

directly to your pet’s individual situation and lifestyle, while adhering to the

most up-to- date vaccination protocols available in veterinary medicine.

If your pet has yet to be vaccinated or if you have any questions regarding

the history of your pet and previously administered vaccinations, feel free

to reach out to us today. We’ll work to understand your pet’s current health

and evaluate what vaccinations might be needed to ensure that they stay

both happy and healthy well into the future!

Surgery

Our surgical capabilities are yet another way that we stand out at Maui Lani

Veterinary Hospital. From routine spays and neuters to far more

complicated medical procedures, our advanced approach to diagnostics and

state-of- the-art veterinary hospital allows us to deliver acute, surgical

solutions that ensure the overall health of your pet!

Discussing your options with Dr. Weeks and our veterinary team will help

you to discover which solutions and approaches might be right for your pet.

To discuss an upcoming surgery or to gain more insight into our approach

and evaluation of your pet, be sure to contact us directly.

Digital X-ray

Modern advancements in radiology allows our veterinary team to obtain

high-definition X-rays that can be profoundly helpful when diagnosing a

wide range of veterinary issues or ailments.

When a specific issue requires more insight than can be obtained through a

routine physical examination, digital X-rays and radiology allow us to

achieve deep insights toward the overall health and medical conditions of

your pet. Our use of digital X-rays creates advanced, detailed images which

require fewer X-rays and exposes your pet to less radiation in the process. If

you feel that your pet could benefit from a digital X-ray, we hope that you’ll

contact us soon.

In-House Diagnostics

Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital is proud to maintain an in-house laboratory,

allowing us to run extensive tests and analysis on-site and without the

burden of extensive turnaround times. This capability saves you time and

ensures that our veterinary team has access to everything that we may need

to diagnose and approach the health of your pet both rapidly and

efficiently. Additionally, our approach to blood work and urinalysis rivals

the most comprehensive analysis and quickest turnaround in the veterinary

industry, rendering more detailed results with faster turnarounds for

profound insight into the health of your pet.

If you have any questions regarding our in-house diagnostics or any of our

other services, we encourage you to send us a message via email or call us

during operating hours at 808-868- 2552.

We thank you for choosing us at Maui Lani Veterinary Hospital and are

thrilled to deliver exceptional service and care to your pet!

VHA Specialty & Referral Copy

***NEW COPY***

– What is a veterinary specialist?

Veterinary specialists are board-certified veterinarians that have undergone

rigorous training in their respective field. By becoming board-certified,

veterinarians are able to showcase specific levels of expertise that are

considered exceptional within the veterinary industry. This allows

veterinary specialists to work on unique, precise and sensitive cases that

may require extensive diagnostic or surgical care.

That’s why Veterinary Healthcare Associates (VHA) is so proud to offer our

specialty referral and emergency services, allowing pet owners from across

Central Florida to receive unparalleled specialty care for their pet when it

matters most. While many veterinary practices are equipped to serve the

routine needs of pets and pet owners, certain cases may require immediate

treatment, long-term around the clock care or another specific set of

specialty treatment.

Veterinary Healthcare Associates is proud to deliver the absolute standard

in both 24-7 emergency care and specialty services. Our commitment to

excellence and our board-certified specialists allow us to handle a wide

range of cases, with both care and compassion.

– Our Specialists

Achieving status as a board-certified specialist is a highly rigorous

endeavor, as veterinarians that wish to be considered specialists must

complete an additional set of qualifications and training. This includes a 3-

year residency program and extensive research, in addition to publishing

work within their field and area of expertise. Residents must then pass a

comprehensive examination as a final component to their respective

residency program. Only once these steps have been completed in full, can

a veterinarian truly be considered a specialist.

While the qualifications required to become board-certified are both highly

intensive and rigorous, VHA believes that there’s even more than

exhaustive training that goes into becoming a truly outstanding specialist.

Our specialists tailor their care for each individual patient, with an

awareness that each situation is unique and requires a personalized,

compassionate approach. This applies not only to our pets, but to our

clients as well. Our specialists give pet owners all of the information that

they need to be informed throughout each step of the veterinary process,

from onboarding and diagnosis to treatment and beyond. We believe that it

takes the right tools to ensure that your pet receives optimized care, so

that’s precisely what we deliver.

VHA’s specialty practice is proud to offer specialized diagnostics, advanced

digital radiology, abdominal and cardiac ultrasound, endoscopy,

bronchoscopy, as well as a comprehensive in-house laboratory with state-

of-the- art equipment. Our veterinary specialists also provide extended care

and critical-care monitoring in case of serious injury or severe illness, while

our 24-hour staff includes qualified nurses and veterinarians both on-site

and available as needed.

With VHA Referral and Specialty Care, you can count on comprehensive,

compassionate care from industry leaders in specialty care.

– What can I expect during my visit?

Veterinary Healthcare Associates knows that a healthy pet is a happy pet.

That’s why we work around the clock to deliver premier veterinary care

with a compassionate touch. While sometimes a visit to our emergency or

specialty practice can be both stressful and time-sensitive, you can rest

assured that the entire VHA staff is hard at work in order to make the

process as easy and efficient as possible. As soon as you step foot inside of

our facility we set to work, diligently taking care of both you and your pet.

Whether it’s our fresh, hot coffee, or complimentary homemade baked

cookies, sodas or waters, we want you to be at ease whenever you visit VHA.

While you make yourself comfortable, we’ll get right to work gathering all

of the important information we need to deliver the absolute best care to

your pet. We’ll guide you through our onboarding procedure and make sure

that you’re able to tell us any necessary information about your pet’s

behavior and well-being. We collect patient history, get vitals on your pet,

and begin to make specific recommendations based on what we’ve found.

We’ll also be sure to provide an itemized estimate of expenses before

moving forward, so that you can make an informed decision as to the best

way to treat your pet.

If your visit is scheduled in advance, consider expediting the onboarding

process by having your current or most recent veterinarian forward all

veterinary records, laboratory and blood work, X-Rays and other applicable

information on your pet directly to VHA. We utilize this information

immediately, as it allows us to gain a comprehensive understanding of your

pet’s background and health history. Letting us know about your pet’s

recent behavior, health treatments, diet and any other pertinent

information helps us go even further when it comes to delivering

personalized care for your pet.

At VHA, you can expect expert veterinary care from a close-knit team that

truly cares about your pet’s well being. Help yourself to some freshly baked

cookies and relax while VHA takes close care of your beloved pet.

– Our Specialty Services

If you’ve been recently referred to us by your primary care veterinarian, or

are simply new to VHA, you may be wondering what specialty services we

offer and exactly what sets us apart.

VHA is different not only because we maintain a state-of- the-art emergency

practice that’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but also because we

provide specialized care that many veterinary practices are simply not

equipped to deliver. For many pet owners across Winter Haven and the

Central Florida area, we’re the closest and most convenient option for all-

hours veterinary care. But beyond just our emergency clinic, VHA is also

the proud home of veterinary specialists that provide levels of expertise that

simply can’t be found elsewhere.

Our team of veterinarians at Veterinary Healthcare Associates provide

comprehensive care solutions for veterinary issues both big and small.

Specialized areas of interest allow us to deliver expert veterinary care across

a huge range of both common and rare medical issues alike. Our team

consists of orthopedic and soft tissue specialists, critical care specialists,

and internal medicine experts to name just a few. What’s more? We’re

expanding our staff and team of veterinary specialists to include even more

areas of expertise.

At VHA, we’re extremely proud to offer:

– Around the clock emergency care: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and

365 days a year. And even after your pet is checked in, you can still

call us to follow-up on your pet, anytime, day or night.

– State-of- the-art equipment and diagnostics including Ultrasound, X-

Rays and MRI.

– Precision surgery from industry renowned specialists and experts in

their field.

– Easy and efficient procedures; our lab work, X-Rays and Ultrasounds

are completed on site, allowing us to minimize processing time and

expediting the entire veterinary procedure.

– A community-oriented veterinary practice dedicated to setting the

industry standard in excellence. VHA believes in empowerment,

teamwork, communication, compassion and excellence in everything

we do.

– Personalized attention from our caring and compassionate staff. Rest

assured that our veterinarians and nurses are on-site and ready to

handle any situation that might arise.

team is trained specifically to deliver personalized, compassionate

care that you can trust.

VHA has established an industry-wide reputation for excellence in

veterinary care and for good reason. By combining board-certified

specialists with state-of- the-art equipment and a compassionate outlook,

the result is happy pet owners and pets alike.

Whether it’s a specialty surgery that allows for plenty of prep time, or on

the spot emergency procedure, VHA delivers the standard in premier

veterinary care.

– VHA’s Specialty Practice Mission Statement

VHA believes in using every tool at our disposal to optimize care for your

pet, while empowering you as a pet owner. Our specialists and state-of-

the-art equipment allows us to deliver a new standard in compassionate

and comprehensive veterinary care.

– VHA’s Core Values

VHA is mission-driven by nature. We don’t believe in just good veterinary

care; we believe in great veterinary care. There are no half measures when

it comes to the care that we provide at Veterinary Healthcare Associates.

That’s why we’re sure to keep our core values at the forefront of our

veterinary practice.

These principles not only shed light on our dedication, but they serve as

important day-to-day reminders as to why we’re dedicated to providing the

best specialty and emergency care possible:

Compassion

At VHA, we believe in a compassionate outlook in everything we do. This

includes our care for both pets and their owners. We have a genuine

passion for helping others and healing pets. We know that the human to

animal bond is a special connection that’s meant to be cherished, and we

bring this level of reverence to our care. We know that each pet and pet

owner is different, so VHA is sure to bring a fresh set of eyes to each

situation. Every pet and pet relationship is absolutely precious, so that’s

exactly how we treat them.

Integrity

We believe deeply in a high ethical code of honesty and integrity

throughout our veterinary practice. VHA believes adamantly in adherence

to the Golden Rule: treating others the way we want to be treated. That’s

why we honor our responsibility to pets, pet owners, and our veterinary

colleagues across the industry. We know that dignity, respect and kindness

must remain driving factors behind our veterinary practice at all times. It’s

our integrity that allows us to deliver precise care time and time again. We

deliver our absolute best even when nobody is looking, because that’s the

VHA way.

Communication

Clear communication leads to confidence, successful results, and symbiotic

partnerships. We know that a successful specialty practice is truly a

partnership between pets, pet owners, referring veterinarians and

ourselves. That’s why we’re sure to listen, ask questions, educate others,

and ensure that there’s understanding and compassion brought to

everything that we do. Whether it’s online or in person, clear

communication is the key to both a strong veterinary practice, and to strong

results we can be proud of.

Teamwork

VHA believes that we’re not simply a veterinary practice, we’re a family.

We’ve built our specialty practice and emergency clinic on both a

fundamental trust and collaborative sense of purpose. We believe in the

strength of the whole, and always lend help when a member of our team

needs a hand. We lend that same sense of teamwork and collaboration to

our pets and pet owners. A sense of community binds us together and gives

us a sense of purpose. We’re not just helping a pet in need, we’re

strengthening both our community and ourselves at the same time!

Empowerment

Our Veterinary Practice also believes in empowerment, the idea that each of

us has strength, a purpose, and the potential to be great. It’s with this

potential in mind that we empower our team members toward individual

success, which leads to the success of our specialty practice as a whole. We

use knowledge as a tool for empowerment, consistently giving pet owners

comprehensive insight into the health of their pet, so that they can make

the best decision possible at any given time. Our sense of empowerment

leads to an efficient practice, and bolsters our commitment to providing

stellar veterinary care.

Excellence

While our veterinary practice is driven by a multitude of principles, it’s

excellence which binds them together. From our highly-trained staff and

veterinary specialists to our facilities, equipment and dedication to your

ease and comfort, we believe in providing excellence above all else. As

leaders in our veterinary community, we’re dedicated to advancing the

capabilities and performance of modern veterinary medicine. Our specialty

and referral services are just the latest iteration of our commitment to

cutting-edge performance and compassionate veterinary care.

– Learn About Our Specialists

Loren T. Nations, DVM, DABVP

When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981, he

knew he wanted to follow his dream of becoming a renowned veterinarian.

After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991, he went on to

complete a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in

Manhattan, NYC; an elite school which is considered to be the Johns

Hopkins of veterinary medicine. However, instead of staying in New York

City, Dr. Nations decided to return home to practice veterinary medicine in

a more intimate setting, alongside his mentor.

Dr. Nation’s persistent desire to help animals, alongside his commitment to

the highest level of veterinary medicine, led to his specialty board

certification in canine and feline practice. This makes Dr. Nations one of

only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country, and 27 in the state of Florida.

Guided by his level of expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven

doctor; 24-hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral

center and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a

veterinary center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come. The

recent completion of a state-of- the-art, 10,000 square foot veterinary

center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations

intends to bring to Central Florida.

“My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the

same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a

veterinarian.”

– Loren T. Nations, DVM, DABVP

Tammi Ruddle, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Ruddle began her love for animals while growing up in a small, rural

town in Northeast Ohio. She proudly attended Ashland University, where

she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr. Ruddle’s pursuit of

becoming a veterinarian was given a boon when she was accepted to The

Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. After

graduating, Dr. Ruddle elected to pursue additional training, specializing in

small animal surgery. She completed a rotating internship at Oradell

Animal Hospital, followed by a surgical internship at Mission MedVet in

Kansas. Dr. Ruddle continued her education at Mission MedVet,

completing her residency in 2005.

Dr. Ruddle became recognized as a Board Certified Small Animal Surgeon

in 2008. Tired of the endless cold, she happily relocated to Florida where

she could enjoy the sunshine and launch into her surgical career.

Dr. Ruddle enjoys staying very active outside of work. She enjoys all of the

pleasures that Florida can offer; including outdoor activities, extensive

hiking and traveling.

In Florida, Dr. Ruddle fell in love with Mavis, a stray Black Mouth Cur that

was brought in by local police after being hit by a car. Knowing she could fix

her broken leg and give her a good home, Dr. Ruddle adopted Mavis, and

soon after, adopted Malin, a rescue from Coastal Boxer Rescue to join in on

the fun. While the two are certainly a handful for Dr. Ruddle to take care of,

the true master of her household is a fat sassy orange tabby named

Cheddar!

Dr. Alise McDaniel, DVM

Dr. Alise McDaniel attended Troy University where she earned her

Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, cum laude, in 2003. Soon after, she

attended Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine proudly

earning her degree in Veterinary Medicine, cum laude, in 2007.

In her time away from veterinary medicine, Dr. McDaniel enjoys online

shopping and working with her small business in skincare as an

Independent Consultant with Rodan + Fields Dermatologists.

Dr. McDaniel also shares her home with her husband, 2 sons, one dog

named Cooper, (who wandered onto the scene one day and decided to stay)

2 cats: "Butch Catsidy" and "The Sundance Kid", both adopted from a local

shelter, and a turtle aptly named "Turtle", who is also a rescued stray.

Dr. McDaniel enjoys staying connected with the community by providing

resources for local shelters, being an active member in the area Chamber of

Commerce, and regularly attending Bell Shoals Baptist Church.

"Veterinary medicine has always been my focus and passion. I have never

dreamed of doing anything else. Witnessing the love and the bond

between pets and their owners is the most inspiring thing I have seen. I

love the gift of being able to be an integral part of this dynamic."

– Dr. Alise McDaniel, DVM

– Referral Services: For Veterinarians

When any referring veterinarian places their trust in VHA to provide

specialized care, we’re sure to deliver with integrity. VHA maintains a

specific procedure whenever a client is referred to our specialty services and

is committed to a referral service that’s both comprehensive and mutually

beneficial.

First, we call our referring vets to get in touch and clarify the veterinary

issue. Then, we’ll fax or email an official referral letter in order to further

coordinate the process. We’ll gather pertinent information on the situation,

including detailed medical notes, diagnostics and potential follow-up plans

or procedures.

Our referral policy also explicitly marks each client in our computer system,

ensuring that they’ll be able to receive emergency or specialized care

accordingly, but only as specified by the referring vet. We believe that both

general practitioners and referring vets should know, we’re committed to

delivering specialized care, not just garnering new business.

The goal at VHA is to ensure that each pet receives the care that they need,

and leaves happy and healthy to return to their pet owner and primary care

veterinarian.

– Trust and Transparency: VHA’s Approach to Collaboration

VHA believes in a collaborative approach to veterinary care that is truly

beneficial for all parties involved. Referring veterinarians and pet owners

alike can rest assured that our approach to care is highly communicative,

compassionate and transparent at all times.

We’ve built the success of our emergency and specialty care practices by

reinforcing our dedication to excellent care, and carefully crafting our

approach to optimize the health of each pet we encounter. We’ll only

provide referral services when it’s approved by an established referring

veterinarian and we keep our lines of communication open throughout the

entire onboarding and treatment process.

A veterinary practice is only as strong as its bond with both the local

veterinary community, and its pet owners. You can count on VHA to not

only deliver stellar veterinary care, but to deliver service and

communication that you can trust.

– Emergency Transfers

Since the nearest emergency clinic is approximately 30 minutes away, it’s

common for cases to come to our 24-7 emergency center at all hours of the

day or night. As is our established procedure with our referrals, VHA’s

emergency care service will keep in touch with a pet’s primary care

veterinarian in order to keep them updated on the case as it progresses

through our facility. Whenever we move forward with an Emergency

Transfer, we’ll be sure to mark the client in our computer system so that

they are only permitted to receive emergency care.

VHA is sure to keep our Emergency Transfer procedure as clear and

communicative as possible, so please don’t hesitate to refer to us with any

questions you may have about our emergency care center and consequent

procedures.
